Great advice from the patriots at Echols Livestock for how to keep animals safe when the fireworks start this week!4th of July Livestock Prep Reminders 🇺🇸

This year marks America’s 250th birthday, and there’s no doubt a lot of people will be celebrating. For those of us with livestock, fireworks can feel more stressful than celebratory…and they’re often more than a one-night concern. The days leading up to and following the 4th can be just as stressful for animals.

As more people move into rural areas, not everyone realizes how much loud noises, flashes, and sudden commotion can affect livestock. Sheep especially can be flighty, and fireworks can send them running, piling into corners, pushing on gates, or injuring themselves. The same can happen with goats, cattle, horses, and other animals.

Whether you’re brand new to livestock or you’ve been doing this your whole life, a little prep before dark can make a big difference.

A few things you can do now to help keep animals safe and settled:

✔️Walk fence lines and check for weak spots
✔️Make sure gates and latches are secure
✔️Move animals before dark — not after they’re already spooked
✔️Remove loose panels, buckets, wire, or anything they could get hurt on
✔️Feed hay before dark to help keep them occupied and settled
✔️Leave barn or pen lights on so lambs can see and stay oriented
✔️Use fans or a radio to help soften sudden sounds
✔️Check ewes with lambs, bottle babies, older animals, new purchases, and anything already stressed
✔️Secure livestock guardian dogs, herding dogs, and pets that may also panic
✔️ Do a barn check after the fireworks slow down
✔️ Check pens, pastures, water troughs, and hay areas for firework debris the next morning

One important reminder: do not give calming medications or sedatives without talking to your veterinarian first. What is safe for one species may not be safe for another.

The goal is not to overthink it, just prepare early, keep their routine as normal as possible, and make sure they are in the safest setup before the noise starts.

Celebrate, enjoy the holiday, and take a few extra steps to keep your livestock safe along the way!

Have you ever heard the phrase "too much of a good thing" ... Yeah, us too and we think that's the kind of silly thing quitters might say.

We're "more is more" people.

How much Chief is enough? The limit does not exist.

He's the late born, FF, genetic powerhouse keeper buck lamb we just couldn't bring ourselves to part with.

🪲It seems fly control is an extra hot topic this summer. And for good reason, particularly with our friends in Texas battling New World Screwworm. Although fly predators are unlikely to be effective on that specifically concerning species, there are still plenty of more traditional flies to want to be rid of. We're on our first full year of the program after starting too late last year.

So far, so good 🤷‍♀️
Has anyone else used them?
